Homemade Bisquik Mix

Whether you are making biscuits or need Bisquik mix on hand to add to other recipes, you can easily make your own homemade mix with simple pantry staples in under 10 minutes.

Store bought Bisquik mix is just all the dry ingredients for biscuits. I usually prefer making biscuits from scratch with butter, but I use the Bisquik mix in a few recipes like Apple Syrup and our family favorite Cheesy Egg Casserole.

You could also use the mix for dishes like Sausage Gravy Breakfast Casserole or Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler.

So making it at home and keeping it on hand is a no brainer. It will keep for a little bit on the shelf but it’s also super easy to freeze it and take it out when you need it.

flour, salt, baking powder, and shortening on a wooden cutting board

Ingredients

  • all purpose flour
  • baking powder
  • salt
  • shortening

Possible substitutions:

If you want you can make the mix with half whole wheat flour and half all purpose flour. It does make slightly denser biscuits but if that doesn’t bother you then go for it.

How to make this:

  1. Add flour, baking powder, and salt into a bowl. Stir to combine.
  2. Using a pastry blender, two forks, or your fingers cut in shortening to the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Store in an airtight container for up to 1 month or in the freezer for 3 months.

To make regular biscuits:

  1. Heat oven to 450 degrees F.
  2. Add 2 1/4 cups biscuit mix and 2/3 cup milk to a bowl. Mix until a soft dough forms. Dump dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead about 10 times just until dough is smooth. Don’t over mix!
  3. Roll out dough until it is about 1/2″ thick and use a biscuit cutter to cut out about 10 biscuits. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes until biscuits are golden brown.

To make drop biscuits:

  1. Heat oven to 450 degrees F.
  2. Add 2 cups biscuit mix and 2/3 cup milk to a bowl. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Use two spoons (or a cookie scoop) to drop 10 biscuits onto an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes until biscuits are golden brown.

Tips and tricks

Measuring shortening can leave behind a bit of a mess. Back in college a friend shared with me this brilliant hack for a no-mess way to measure shortening.

All you need to do is line your measuring cup with plastic wrap, measure your shortening, and then remove the shortening filled plastic wrap to use it!

Top Tips for cooking with kids

Bisquik is super handy when baking with children, especially younger children but it is also good for kids to see that the stuff they can buy in the box actually comes from ingredients you have at home.

You can use a food processor to speed up the whole mixing process if you plan on making something else with the Bisquik mix.

It also might be fun to make both drop biscuits and rolled biscuits and compare them. Here are some talking points:

  • Talk about which ones you like more and why.
  • What was different in how they were made?
  • Brainstorm what flavors you could add to the dough (like these cheesy garlic jalapeno drop biscuits)
