Brazilian Lemonade

Brazilian lemonade is an easy drink to make with limes and sweetened condensed milk that is a kid friendly option and one children can easily make by themselves.

Brazilian lemonade is one of those confusingly named recipes because there are no lemons in the drink. Who knows how it came to be called that?

Many of the recipes that I’ve tried in the past used the whole lime which results in a very bitter drink that takes a lot of sweetened condensed milk to counter it.

To combat the bitterness, I decided to use lime zest instead of the whole lime. I also found that the leftovers keep better than when you use the whole lime. This will keep for up to 2-3 days in the fridge.

This drink is the perfect accompaniment to a Latin themed meal and I’ve found drinks are always a good way to get kids excited about a meal.

Ingredients you need

  • lime zest
  • fresh lime juice
  • sugar
  • cold water
  • sweetened condensed milk

The amount of lime juice you can get from a fresh lime can vary greatly. When shopping, look for limes that feel heavier than a similar sized counterpart because those are more likely to be juicier.

You can also microwave your limes for about 15-20 seconds on high to soften up the limes so they release their juices easier. If you keep your limes in the fridge, microwave them for 30 seconds and allow to sit for about a minute before attempting to juice them.

How to make this

  1. In a blender, blend the lime zest, fresh lime juice, sugar, and 3 cups of cold water.
  2. Add the sweetened condensed milk and blend again.
  3. Add remaining water and stir well. Serve over ice.

Although I used a blender, you could skip the blender and mix all the ingredients together in a pitcher. If you choose to make it in a pitcher, it will take a bit of extra mixing to make sure the sweetened condensed milk is thoroughly combined.
