Easy Homemade Buttermilk Syrup
You will fall in love with this buttermilk syrup recipe that is so easy you’ll be mad you didn’t know how to make it sooner! Requiring just 5 ingredients and 10 minutes this will be a favorite addition for breakfast.
Table of contents
We first had this years ago when my mother in law made it for a pancake breakfast we had after climbing Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona. We were all completely famished and we came back to a table full of pumpkin chocolate chip pancakes and this buttermilk syrup.
The syrup quickly became a family favorite and is one that I usually make in a double batch because we go through it so fast. We like having it with other things beside pancakes like this Overnight Berry Baked French Toast or Blackberry Waffles.
Ingredients you’ll need to make this
- butter
- buttermilk
- sugar
- vanilla
- baking soda
I bet the only thing you don’t have already is the buttermilk! Isn’t that awesome?
Can I use buttermilk powder instead of buttermilk?
Yes, you can use buttermilk powder! If you want to replace the buttermilk you will use water and the buttermilk powder.
How to make this
- In a saucepan, melt butter.
- Add sugar and stir until dissolved.
- Add buttermilk and vanilla and bring to a slight boil stirring constantly. Remove pan from heat.
- Add baking soda and mix well. Mixture will be bubbly and foamy. Serve warm.
To make this with buttermilk powder
- Start by melting the butter.
- Then add the sugar and buttermilk powder and mix until dissolved.
- Next, add the water and vanilla and bring mixture to a slight boil.
- Remove from heat. Add baking soda and mix well.

How long will buttermilk syrup last in the fridge?
If kept in a sealed airtight container, the syrup will keep for about 1-2 weeks. It will need to be heated up before serving because the butter in the syrup causes the whole thing to solidify.
I keep mine in a mason jar with the lid on and keep it towards the back of the fridge. To pour the syrup, I love this Ergo spout which makes it so easy!
Reheating instructions
I microwave the syrup in 30 second intervals until it returns to a liquid state. Depending on how much syrup is leftover this may take several rounds to do.
