Sourdough Waffles (using sourdough starter discard)

These delicious Sourdough Waffles are such a treat that can be enjoyed for either breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner any day of the week.  Made with unfed sourdough starter they are delicious way to use sourdough starter discard.

This sourdough waffle recipe is fluffy, has a hint of sweetness and they will get your kids sitting around the table to enjoy these yummy waffles.

Bonus! This is not just one of the best waffle recipes because it tastes so good, it can also double as pancake batter! No need to get overwhelmed with recipes!

How long does it take to make these waffles?

From start to finish, gathering the ingredients, making the waffle batter, to when you pour the batter onto the waffle iron to serving, the recipe takes about 20 minutes. 

Many waffle recipes can take 30 minutes or more. But, since time is always of the essence in our home I try to keep most of my recipes, short and simple without sacrificing flavor. 

Equipment

  • Waffle maker– If you’ve got a big family like mine, go for the double sided waffle iron. It makes a world of difference it churning out those waffles as fast as my crew can eat them!

Making this with the kids over the weekend is a great way to teach them how to be handy and productive in the kitchen. Overnight waffles and fermentation

Looking for additional health benefits of fermentation, then allow the batter to sit in the fridge overnight. 

Want a bit more of the sour flavor, leaving the batter overnight in the fridge will add in more of the sour flavor to your sourdough waffles mixture

You will not need to leave the batter overnight in the fridge in order to have a sourdough taste the waffles will be delicious either way.

The batter can stay in the fridge for up to 2 days. Just be sure to stir it once per day. This is a living dough so you will want to mix it to make sure it is happy.

How to store, freeze and reheat

You can easily store these waffles after they have been both cooked and then cooled completely either in the refrigerator or in the freezer for long-term storage and those busy days we all have. 

Fridge storage

Place in an air-tight container for up to 6 days in your refrigerator. This is great if you double or triple the recipe for upcoming busy days.

Freezer storage

Making a few extra, no problem. You can easily store these sourdough waffles in the freezer and save for a rainy day. 

Place in an air-tight container or zip-top bag place in the freezer for up to 6 months. 

Reheating your waffles

This simple sourdough waffles recipe is easy to make, store and reheat. It is a pretty forgiving batter that you can work with very easily.  Here are the instructions for reheating your frozen waffles

Oven

  1. Lay your waffles in a single layer on your baking sheet
  2. Cook for 15-20 minutes on 350 degrees
  3. Heat until heated all the way through, or desired temperature.

Microwave

  1. Place 2 waffles on a microwave-safe plate
  2. Cover with a damp paper towel
  3. Cook for 1 minute on medium power
  4. Heat until heated all the way through, or desired temperature.

  • ½ cup Sourdough Starter Discard unfed
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 4 Tablespoon Melted Butter unsalted butter, cooled
  • 1 ½ cups Water

Instructions

  • Start with your dry ingredients first.
  • In a medium bowl add all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, sugar, and then combine.
  • Next, in a large bowl add your cooled butter, vanilla, sourdough starter discard, water, and combine the wet ingredients.
  • Add your wet ingredients to your flour mixture and then combine.
  • Heat your waffle iron
  • Use your 1/4 measuring cup to add your sourdough waffle batter to your waffle iron.
  • Cook for approximately 2 minutes until golden brown (1 to 3 minutes depending on your waffle iron)
  • Repeat the process until the remaining batter is gone and all 6 waffles are made
  • Serve with syrup.

    I was looking for a sourdough starter waffle recipe and I was all out of milk. Your recipe was the first one that I saw that didn’t call for milk and now I am so glad I was out of milk! These are the best waffles that I have ever had. Thank you for the recipe!
