Pumpkin Pasties- Harry Potter Style

Pumpkin pasties, a special treat mentioned in Harry Potter, are made with a pumpkin pie spice crust shaped to look like a pumpkin and filled with a pumpkin pie filling. They are a fun dessert for a Harry Potter themed party.

These mini pumpkin shaped hand pies are a fun addition to a Harry Potter party and not nearly as hard to make as they might look. We paired them with Pumpkin Juice (which we served warm like cider) .

I’ve been dying to make pumpkin pasties for the longest time. There is no mention of if they are sweet or savory so this time around I decided to sweet. But don’t worry I’m working on savory Pumpkin Pasties as well!

Now, I’m making all the Harry Potter themed recipes that have been on my list like these Easy Harry Potter Themed Cupcakes. These treats are perfect to give with one of the awesome Harry Potter kitchen gifts for any Potterhead!

What are pumpkin pasties?

Pumpkin pasties are a food mentioned in the Harry Potter series. The first time we hear of them are on the first train ride to Hogwarts where Harry buys a whole lot of treats from the trolley witch.

I used Dixie Crystals (or Imperial Sugar depending where you live) brown sugar in the filling and a touch of granulated sugar on top. I like that these little pumpkin pasties are sweet without being too sweet.

Ingredients

Substitutions:

I made a pumpkin spice pie dough for this but you could absolutely use a store bought pie dough. If you wanted to add extra pumpkin spice flavor you could mix pumpkin pie spice into the flour that you use to roll out the dough.

How to make pie crust in a food processor?

  1. Add dry ingredients to the food processor. Pulse to combine.
  2. Combine the dry ingredients with shortening. Process until the mixture becomes crumb like. I added pumpkin pie spice to the dough for a little extra flavor.
  3. Add the least amount of water possible and process using the pulse feature just until the dough comes together.
  4. Form the dough into a flat circle and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

How to make pumpkin pasties?

  1. Roll the pie crust out (or use store-bought pie crust). Use a pumpkin cookie cutter to cut out  pumpkin shapes. Use a small leaf cookie cutter to cut out just below the stem on half of the pumpkins.
  2. Place pumpkin filling on the pumpkins without a leaf cut out.
  3. Use the remaining pumpkin cutouts to top the pumpkins with the filling.
  4. Use a fork to seal the edges pressing down well. Place the leaf opposite the cut out.
  5. Brush with an egg wash and bake.

Notes

My pumpkin cookie cutter was in a big cookie cutter set from Wilton and it is about 3 inches wide.  The leaf cookie cutter I used was from a different Wilton set.
If you don’t want to make your own pie dough, use store bought.  You may need to buy 3-4 packages.
